Trellis Crochet Stitch

Learn how to crochet the Trellis stitch with this photo tutorial.

The Trellis stitch is an easy crochet stitch combining basic crochet stitches to form small openings and light texture.

Materials

  • 4 mm / US G – 6 hook.
  • Worsted weight yarn.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Size

The pattern is written for a 15 cm by 15 cm / 6” by 6” square.

You can easily adapt the size to your desired project size. The pattern needs a multiple of 2 number of stitches; your starting chain will be a multiple of 2 + 1 for an extra turning chain.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern is 18.5 st by 13 rows in stitch pattern for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet

Special Stitches and Techniques

Back loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the back loop.

The Actual Trellis Stitch Pattern

With your 4mm / US G- 6 hook ch 28 + 1,

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from the hook hdc, hdc across, turn. < 28 st>

Row 2: Ch 1, [ch 1, skip 1, sc in the back loop only] repeat across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.

* Note: Don’t make the hdc in the ch-1 space but in the ch-1 stitch.

Repeat Row 2-3 until you reach 15 cm / 6”. Finish on a Row 3.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
