Trellis Crochet Stitch

The Trellis stitch is an easy crochet stitch combining basic crochet stitches to form small openings and light texture.
Materials
- 4 mm / US G – 6 hook.
- Worsted weight yarn.
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
Size
The pattern is written for a 15 cm by 15 cm / 6” by 6” square.
You can easily adapt the size to your desired project size. The pattern needs a multiple of 2 number of stitches; your starting chain will be a multiple of 2 + 1 for an extra turning chain.
Gauge
The gauge for this pattern is 18.5 st by 13 rows in stitch pattern for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US notations.
- st = stitch
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
Special Stitches and Techniques
Back loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the back loop.
The Actual Trellis Stitch Pattern
With your 4mm / US G- 6 hook ch 28 + 1,
Row 1: In the 2nd ch from the hook hdc, hdc across, turn. < 28 st>
Row 2: Ch 1, [ch 1, skip 1, sc in the back loop only] repeat across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.
* Note: Don’t make the hdc in the ch-1 space but in the ch-1 stitch.
Repeat Row 2-3 until you reach 15 cm / 6”. Finish on a Row 3.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
