8 Organizational Tips to Use Around the Kitchen This January

Consider this your official kitchen cleaning checklist for this January. All of these small improvements - like cleaning out your microwave and cleaning out your fridge of old condiments - add up to make a big difference. Your kitchen will become a happier (and much cleaner) place as you check off the following tasks to do in the kitchen next month.
1. Clean your microwave thoroughly
If you quickly wipe out your microwave with a paper towel every time something splatters, that's short-term OK, but if you clean it thoroughly and leave it sparkling clean, you'll feel much better every time you open it.
2 Overhaul your pantries
Now would be a good time to figure out what's in your pantry, even if you are pretty sure none of your staples are expired. If you have some ancient baking ingredients that could be replaced, you will feel better knowing that you are actually using the products you have on hand.
3. Rid your fridge from old condiments.
Check the label of every spice in your fridge - especially the questionable jars you forgot about. Throw away anything that's out of date and make room for fresh spices.
4. Use extra containers to organize your drawers
One of the things about having a well- organized kitchen is that people only have as many food containers as they really need. Clean up the overflowing pile of plastic containers and use the excess containers to organize the drawers where you store various cooking utensils.
5. Get a sponge holder
That sponge sitting atop your sink can attract serious bacteria if it's not kept clean, stored in a dry place, and replaced regularly. To maximize its quality, invest in a sponge holder if you do not already have one.
6. Get your mug obsession in check
Serious question: do you know how many coffee mugs you own? Free up cupboard space by going through all your mugs and getting rid of any you do not absolutely need.
7. Organize your freezer
Freezer-friendly recipes are very helpful, but there also comes a time when you need to throw away leftovers. Take a good look at your freezer and part with raw meats that have been in the freezer for a year, as well as questionable old leftovers. Then you'll have enough room to plan your meals with ice cube trays.
8. Get a handle on your spice cabinet
The best way to store spices is to avoid direct sunlight or heat sources (i.e. hide them in a cabinet or drawer). If your spice rack or spice cabinet is completely out of control, get rid of the old spices you'll never use and keep your favorites front and center.
