9 Simple Hacks to Save Electricity At Home

Electricity is a utility that we take for granted. There are a lot of places around the world that don’t have good electrical infrastructures and the fact that we only lose power during natural disasters is actually pretty awesome. That said, electricity can also be expensive. These simple life hacks will help you save money on energy bills and become more energy efficient.

1. Save power by unplugging unused electronics

Every electronic device in your home takes energy to run. Did you know they also take electricity when they’re not being used? An easy way to remedy this is to unplug electronic devices when not in use.

2. Or just use a power bar for clusters of electronics, then simply flip the switch on the bar to turn everything off when not in use. Even when turned off, many home electronics consume energy while in standby mode to power clocks and display information.

3. Turn off the computer

The biggest energy-eater at home is usually a computer. Try to turning off the computer's power into a habit. A simple habit change is one of the easiest ways to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

4. Turn off your lights

What good is a light when no one is around to enjoy it? Sure, keeping the lights on can help you feel safe or make your home feel more welcoming, but letting the lights shine all day uses loads of electricity and costs serious cash.

5. Also, you can install energy efficient light bulbs. Not only do energy efficient light bulbs save electricity (hooray for a lower electric bill!), they also last many times longer than a traditional light bulb.

6. Wash and rinse clothes in cold water.

90% of the cost of washing a load of clothes comes from heating the water – and detergent works just as well in cold.

7. Install low-flow faucets and shower heads that have greater aeration capacity, and shorten time spent in the shower.

8. Lower the thermostat on your hot water tank from 140°F to 120°F. 120°F is perfectly adequate for showering, dishes, clothes washing, etc.

9. Reduce and eliminate hot areas in your home by using window films, solar screens, blackout curtains and high-performance windows to help keep rooms cool. Blackout curtains can trap heat in during the winter and keep light and heat out during the summer. 10-25% of thermal energy loss goes out the windows. Blackout curtains can curtail this loss by a 25%, reducing your utility bills and greenhouse gases. This hack will help reduce the consumption of air conditioner and therefore lower the electricity bill.

Reducing electricity consumption and lowering your power bill doesn't have to be difficult. Applying these simple life hacks can help you live more comfortably in your home and allow you to save money.

I hadn't realized that blackout curtains also help retain heat in a room 👍
