Railroad Crochet Stitch

The Railroad stitch is a great crochet stitch for blankets combining basic crochet stitches to form a lightly textured fabric without holes.
Materials
- 4 mm / US G – 6 hook.
- Worsted weight yarn.
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
Size
The pattern is written for a 15cm by 15cm / 6” by 6” square.
You can easily adapt the size to your desired project size. You don’t need to follow any multiple for this stitch pattern.
Gauge
The gauge for this pattern is 18 st by 12 rows in stitch pattern for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US notations.
- st = stitch
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
Special Stitches
Back loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the back loop.
Front loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the front loop.
The Actual Stitch Pattern
With your 4mm / US G- 6 hook ch 27 + 1,
Row 1: In the 2nd ch from the hook sc, sc across, turn. < 27 st>
Row 2: Ch 3, tr across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in the back loop only, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in the front loop only, turn.
Repeat Row 2-5 until you reach 15 cm / 6”. Finish on a Row 5.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
