How To Crochet The Y-Stitch Photo Tutorial

Last Summer I came across an awesome stitch that I absolutely love for lace and Summer designs! This stitch can look very similar to the V-Stitch but when you get a good look at it you can see the difference.

This stitch will work great with so many weight yarns from Lace weight to worsted weight.

This stitch is called the Y-Stitch. The Y-stitch consists of 3 parts – a treble crochet stitch, a chain stitch and a double crochet stitch.

The combination of these 3 stitches is what creates the awesome Y-stitch.

Learn how to crohet the Y-stitch with this photo tutorial.

Stitches/Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sk – skip
  • dc– double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • Y-st – Y-stitch

Y-Stitch – (tr in indicated st, ch 1, dc in bottom 2 vertical bars of tr st)

Note: Y-stitches are worked in multiples of 3 plus 2

Instructions

Step 1: Create a tr st in indicated st and then ch 1

Step 2: Work a dc st in the 2 vertical bars at the bottom of the tr st – indicated in yellow

Hook pictured in the 2 vertical bars of the tr st.

Other Important Notes & Swatches

When working a swatch or project using the Y-stitch, you can decide to make all rows Y-stitches or you can separate the Y-stitch rows with another stitch row such as a single crochet or a half double crochet.

If you want to make a project using all Y-stitches then see Swatch Example 1 below.

When you want to separate the Y-stitch rows with a row of another stitch between them see Swatch Example 2.

Swatch Example 1: Chain multiples of 3 plus 2

Ch 17.

Row 1: Y-st in 6th ch from hook (beginning ch count as a tr st), *sk 2, Y-st in next; repeat from * across until 2 chs remain, sk 1, tr in last, turn – 2 tr, 4 Y-sts.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as s tr st), Y-st in each ch sp of each Y-st across, tr in last, turn – 2 tr, 4 Y-sts.

Rows 3 +: Repeat Row 2.

Example Swatch 2: Chain multiples of 3 plus 2 plus 1

Ch 18.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across, turn – 17 sc.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as a tr st), sk 1, Y-st in next, *sk 2, Y-st in next; repeat from * across until 2 sts remain, tr in last, turn – 2 tr, 5 Y-sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch sp across, turn – 17 sc.

Rows 4 +: Repeat Rows 2-3.
