How to Crochet the Drunken Granny Stitch Photo Tutorial

A super fun spin on the traditional granny stitch: today I’m excited to share a photo tutorial for the Drunken Granny Crochet Stitch!

When I first saw the name of this stitch, I went, “huh? What a strange name for a stitch!”

But when I looked it up, everything started to make sense. The Drunken Granny Stitch was given its name because it looks similar to traditional granny stitches, but lopsided. Whoever named this stitch certainly had a sense of humor!

Materials:

This stitch can be worked in just about any size and type of yarn you’d like! I am using a sport weight yarn and an F/3.75mm crochet hook in this tutorial. However, many people use worsted weight yarn and an H hook! Feel free to try different combos and see what you like best.

Abbreviations:

• Chain – ch
• Double crochet – dc
• Skip – sk
• Space(s) – sp(s)

Notes:

• The Drunken Granny Stitch is worked in multiples of 5+4 chains. It is a one row repeat.
• Chain 3 at beginning of rows counts as a double crochet.

Instructions:

Chain 34 (or any multiple of 5, plus 4 more chains).

Row 1: Sk 5 ch, (3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in next ch. *Sk 4 ch, (3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in next ch. Rep from * until 3 ch are left. Sk 2 ch, dc in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3. *(3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Rep from * across all ch-2 sps. Dc in last dc.

Repeat row 2 for the stitch pattern!
