Crochet Tutorial: Boxed Puff Stitch

The Boxed Puff Stitch is a variation of the classic stitch with the same name, where the puff stitches are alternated with double crochet stitches that “enclose” them and give them the boxed look. It works great for baby afghans, modern blankets, cardigans, and other wearables. This is an easy tutorial perfect for beginner crocheters who are looking for a simple pattern with an intricate design.

Techniques used in this pattern (British term / American term):

Chain stitch - ch

Double crochet / Single crochet - dc/sc Treble / double crochet - tr/dc

Double treble - Treble - d.tr / tr

5 half tr / half dc puff st - puff st

Stitch - st

Foundation Chain: Multiples of 8 + 6

Row 1: Skip 1ch, * 1dc/sc in next ch, 5ch, 1 puff st in next ch: yarn over (yo), insert hook in the ch, yarn over and draw yarn thorough the ch making loop the same size as 5ch.

Repeat the preceding step more 4 times (in the same st). Yarn over and draw yarn through first 10 loops,

yarn over and draw yarn through all lops. Make 1 puff st in each of the next 2 ch. Skip 4ch; rep from *, 1dc/sc in next ch, work 3 puff st + 1d.tr / tr in last ch, turn.

Row 2: 1ch, 1dc/sc in d.tr/tr below, 5ch, 1 puff st in each of the next 3 puff st below, * 1 dc/sc in 5th ch, 3 puff st in space of 5ch; rep from*,

1 dc/sc in 5th ch, work 3 puff st + 1d.tr / tr in last dc/sc, turn.

Repeat row 2 until you have reached your desired length.
