Mixed Cluster Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial

We are learning the Mixed Cluster Crochet Stitch today! This is a super fun stitch and one of my many favorites.

This stitch is similar to how we work the paired double crochet. You’ll start this stitch in one stitch and you’ll end in a different one. Then the next stitch starts in the same stitch as the last one ended. Clear as mud? Don’t worry once you get going you’ll understand.

Materials

  • #4/Worsted Weight Yarn (Bernat Super Value used in sample)
  • 5.5mm crochet hook
  • Needle to weave in ends
  • Scissors

Gauge and Sizing

  • Gauge: 3 mixed clusters x 5 rows in pattern
  • Finished: 12 x 12

Abbreviations

  • Ch(s): chain(s)
  • Hdc: half double crochet
  • St(s): stitch(es)
  • MC: mixed cluster
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Sl st: slip stitch

Mixed Cluster (mc): yo, insert hook in stitch indicated, pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops. Skip 1 st. Yo, insert hook in next st, pull up loop (4 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into same st and pull up another loop. Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook.

Notes

  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
  • Make sure your beginning chain is loose
  • To make this square bigger or smaller chain any multiple of 2
  • My square turned out a little smaller than I would have liked but for the sake of time, I did not re-do it. If I were to do it over I would start with a chain of 36.

Mixed Cluster Square Crochet Pattern

Ch 34 to start.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn (33 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1, mc starting in the same st as hdc. *Ch 1, Mc starting in the same st as end of previous mc. Repeat from * across. Hdc in same st as end of last mc. Turn. (16 mc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1 and in each st and ch 1 space across. Turn. (33 sc)

Row 4-27: repeat rows 2 and 3. Do not turn on last row and continue to border.

Border

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around placing 3 sc in each corner st. Join to top of 1st sc with sl st.

Repeat as needed until your square is 12 in.
