Leaping Stripes Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial
I love a crochet stitch that lends itself well to color work, has a unique look and has a simple and easy repeat. The Leaping Stripes and Blocks crochet stitch has all three characteristics!
The best part is that it is so much easier than it looks using just chains, single crochet and double crochet stitches throughout.

Materials:
- Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Rustic Romantic, Weight 4 Medium (85% acrylic / 15% hemp) 220 yd / 3.5 oz
- Color A: Blueberry Bushel
- Color B: Blush
- Crochet hook size H (5 mm)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
- RS = right side
- sc = single crochet
- ch(s) = chain(s)
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- dc = double crochet
- sp(s) = space(s)
- sk = skip
Notes:
- To resize, chain multiples of 4 + 2 for foundation chain.
- If adding a border, do not cut yarn when changing between colors – drop unused yarn to be picked up 2 rows later.
Instructions:
With Color A, ch desired number of chains. Sample is worked with 34 chains.
Row 1: (RS) 1 dc in fourth ch from hook (skipped chs count as first st), dc in next ch, *ch 2, sk 2, 1 dc in next 2 chs,* repeat from * to * to last st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (18 sts + 7 ch-2 sps)
Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc in same st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, *working over the ch-2 and in unworked chs from row below 1 dc in next 2 chs, ch 2, sk next 2 sts,* repeat from * to * to last st, 1 sc in last st. Switch to Color B. Turn. (16 sts + 8 ch-2 sps)
Row 3: ch 3 (counts as a st), *working over the ch-2 and in unworked stitches from row below 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2,* repeat from * to * to last ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 2 sts from row below, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (18 sts + 7 ch-2 sps)
Row 4: ch 1, 1 sc in same st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, *working over the ch-2 and in unworked sts from row below 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, sk next 2 sts,* repeat from * to * to last st, 1 sc in last st. Switch to Color A. Turn.
Continue to repeat rows 3 – 4 to size desired, alternating colors every two rows.
Last row: (even row) ch 1, sc in first three sts, *working over the ch-2 and in unworked stitches from row below 1 dc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts,* repeat from * to * to last st, 1 sc in last st. (32)
