Crochet Faux Knit 2×2 Rib Stitch Photo Tutorial

I created this crochet stitch to use for an upcoming project – the Winter Park Hat. I wanted a stitch that would mimic the look of knit 2×2 ribbing with all the stretchiness as well.
I started playing around with a combination of extended half double crochet with slip stitches worked in the the front third loop of the ehdc and came up with this stitch!
I love how stretchy it is – and it really does look like knit!

Materials
- Patons Chunky Cotton
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- RS = right side
- ehdc = extended half double crochet
- blo = back loop only
- st = stitch
- yo = yarn over
Special stitches
- Extended half double crochet (ehdc) : yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 1 loop on hook (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Notes
- Stitch is made with any number of chains to start + 2 for foundation chain.
- Sample shown is a chain of 27.
Instructions
Row 1: ehdc in 3rd ch from hook (skipped chains do not count as st) and in each ch to end. Turn.
Row 2: ch 1, sl st loosely in each st working in front 3rd loop of ehdc st below to last st, sl st in top 2 loops of ehdc st below. Turn.
Row 3: ch 2 (does not count as st), ehdc in blo of same st, ehdc in blo of each sl st from previous row to last st, ehdc in both loops of last st. Turn.
Continue repeating rows 2 – 3 to size desired.
