Crochet Basics: Moss Stitch Tutorial

The moss stitch is a beautiful beginner-friendly crochet stitch. If I had to choose a favorite stitch, the moss stitch would definitely be at the top of the list. The moss stitch in crochet is a combination of stitches made by switching between single crochets and chains. It is a nice pattern that you can easily learn once you’ve mastered single crochet, chains, and skipping chains/stitches. The almost mesh pattern in the moss stitch leaves the fabric with a beautiful drape while still looking solid.

The moss stitch really shines when doing any sort of color stripe work. By varying how wide your strips are, you can create completely different and modern look.

Stitches & Abbreviations

ch – chain stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stich

Instructions

Start with an even number of chain stitches. For this tutorial I began with 16 chain stitches. Skip first three chain stitches and work a single crochet into the 4th chain from the hook. The needle points at the right chain.

Next, chain one, skip the next chain and single crochet into the next chain. Again, the needle points at the right chain.

Then repeat that sequence to the end of the row: chain 1, skip one chain and single crochet in the next chain stitch. In other words, you will have a row of single crochet stitches separated by chain one spaces. The last stitch should be a single crochet at the last chain.

Then turn your work and make 2 chains. Crochet single crochet into the first ch-1 space of the previous row. Repeat the pattern from the row 1: chain1, skip 1 stitch, single crochet in the next chain-1 space until the end of the row.

The last single crochet should be worked into the chain space you used to begin the row 1.

Continue Row 2 as long as you would like.

When you add row upon row in this stitch, you get a beautifully textured design. It looks a lot more detailed and complicated than it actually is to crochet, which allows you to make projects that you'll really be proud of, even if you are a beginner to the craft.

Since this is such a simple crochet stitch pattern, you can easily use it to make almost any type of project. As a beginner, you might not want to worry about how to increase and decrease in this stitch pattern, though. Therefore, many of the crochet moss stitch patterns that you will find are square or rectangular projects. Washcloths, dishcloths, scarves, and blankets all look great in crochet moss stitch.
