Crochet Basics: Mesh Stitch

The crochet mesh stitch is a pattern of squares made by skipping stitches. It creates an open, airy fabric that is quick and easy to work. The fun thing about this stitch is that it not only looks beautiful on its own, there are so many more, different ways to work with it once it's complete. It can be used as a background for other stitches by working on the surface of the mesh or around the posts. Adding flowers or other creative stitches can really make this kind of project pop. It’s also great for weaving in embellishments, like ribbon or decorative yarns. The possibilities are endless on how you can add additional texture and creativity to this stitch. Discover how to make this beautiful stitch.

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. At the end of each row you will need to either chain one and turn your work. The chain one at the beginning does not count as a stitch.

For this stitch pattern you can use an even number of stitches.

For my swatch I will be making a foundation chain of 22 chain stitches.

Row One:

Single crochet in the second chain from your hook, * chain one, skip the next chain and single crochet in the next stitch.

Repeat from * all the way across.

Chain one and turn your work.

Row Two:

Single crochet into the first stitch, *chain one, skip the next chain one space and single crochet into the next stitch.

Repeat from * all the way across working your final single crochet into the top of the last single crochet stitch.

Chain one and turn your work.

And that’s it!

For the rest of your pattern your are simply going to repeat row two! It is that easy.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Tip: To achieve straighter edges, crochet the last stitch into the turning chain instead of crocheting it into the last sc st. You can do it either way, but whichever way you choose, be sure to be consistent.
