How to Crochet the Waistcoat Moss Stitch Photo Tutorial
The Waistcoat Moss Stitch pattern is a beautiful, solid design that combines the texture of the moss stitch and the unique look of the waistcoat stitch.
I love the moss stitch – it’s a pattern with a great texture that I have used in many projects. I especially love it in blankets. I also love the waistcoat or knit stitch for its knit look! This stitch pattern combines the two patterns and the results are wonderful!
On the front side of the fabric, you will have this striking knit stitch look and a fabric that is not too dense. The “look” of the design is mostly to the front side, but the back is not too far off which makes this pattern great for even your reversible projects.

Materials
- worsted-weight yarn
- 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook
Abbreviations
- Ch – Chain Stitch
- Rpt – Repeat
- Sc – Single Crochet
- Sl St – Slip Stitch
- WS – Waistcoat Stitch (A single crochet stitch worked between the two vertical bars of the post of the single crochet or waistcoat stitch below. In this pattern only it will be worked through the post of the stitch two rows below.)
- Yo – Yarn Over
Notes
- This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a solid colour.
- To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you will need an even number of stitches for your foundation chain. For example, ch 30.
Instructions
Row One: Sc in 2nd ch from your hook and each across. Ch 1, turn.
Row Two: Sc in 1st st, *ch 1, sk the next st, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Row Three: Sc in the 1st st, *WS in the next st 2 rows below, sc in next st; Rpt from * across. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows two and three. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
