Spiked Sedge Stitch Photo Tutorial
This stitch pattern is a great variation on the Sedge Stitch!
It is a textured stitch that is made with basic stitches only. So, it is a very beginner-friendly pattern that you can use in a lot of your projects. So, are you ready to learn how to make the spiked sedge stitch? Let’s take a look!
TOOLS
- A crochet hook H/5mm
- Scissors
- Needle
MATERIAL
- 1 skein of yarn
STITCHES USED IN SPIKED SEDGE STITCH
To make the spiked stitch you need:
Slip Knot
Use the crochet hook to draw the yarn through the loop and pull the loop until tight.
Chain (CH)
Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.
Pull the hook with the yarn, through the loop that is on your hook
Skip (SK)
Skip the next chain and put your hook into the following chain or stitch. This is indicated using, SK 1 CH
Single Crochet (SC)
Start with one loop on your hook
Slide the hook in the chain stitch. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull the yarn through the chain stitch.
You now have 2 loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and draw it through both loops on the hook
Half Double Crochet (HDC)
Yarn over and put your hook into the next stitch
Yarn over and pull the yarn through
Then yarn over again and pull the yarn through all three loops on the hook
To begin a new row, chain two for a turning chain then turn your work. Continue with the half double crochet stitch in the next stitch and repeat as described
Double Crochet (DC)
Wrap the yarn over the hook and put your hook into the next stitch or the third chain from your hook when you start
Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch
Wrap the yarn over and pull the yarn through two of the three loops on the hook
Yarn over once more and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on the hook
HOW TO CROCHET SPIKED SEDGE STITCH
To make a swatch for this stitch follow the instructions as described below:
Starting Row: Make a slip knot and chain a multiple of 3 stitches + 2. This swatch has 20 chains
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from the hook all the way across the row. CH 1, turn
Row 2: Crochet an SC, HDC, and DC in the 2nd CH from the hook, * skip 2 chains, then crochet an SC, HDC, and DC into the next space. Repeat these steps from * until all the way across to the end. You have 1 stitch left now crochet 1 SC. CH 1, turn
Row 3: Crochet the SC, HDC in the first stitch, DC in the space below the first SC 2 rows below, * SK the next 2 stitches, SC, HDC in the next st, DC in the space below the SC 2 rows below. Repeat from * all the way to the end. SC in final stitch, CH1, turn
Repeat row 3 until your pattern or swatch is completed.
