How to Crochet Zigzag Spike Puff Stitch Photo Tutorial

The Zigzag Spike Puff Stitch is such a neat stitch, especially when worked in multiple colours as I will in the tutorial below.

The pattern creates a very thick fabric that is solid and the same on both sides. It is worked by creating rows of alternating puff stitches worked in the spaces two rows below. The stitch, because of a combination of the spike stitches and puff stitches does require a bit more yarn, but the results are well worth it. I could see this stitch being used in kitchen accessories, blankets, hats, scarves, bags and more!

Notes:

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial. You may work the stitch in one colour or many. I will be working the design in a three different colour (called A, B, and C).

To begin, make a slip knot and then chain your desired number of chains. For this stitch pattern you will need a multiple of two stitches plus two stitches for your foundation chain (multiples of 2+2).

For example, With colour A, ch 22.

Zigzag Spike Puff Stitch Pattern

Row One: Sc in 2nd and each across switching to colour B in the final st. With colour B, ch 1, turn.

Row Two: Sc in 1st st, ch 1, puff (see “stitches and abbreviations”) in the next, *ch 1, sk the next st, puff in next; rpt from * across, ending with a sc in the final st. Switch to colour C in the final st. With colour C, ch 1, turn.

Row Three: Sc in 1 st, *ch 1, sk the next puff st, in next skipped sc 2 rows below work puff; rpt from * across, sk the final puff, sc in final st and change to colour A, ch 1, turn.

Row Four: Sc in 1 st, ch 1, puff in next ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch one, rpt from * across, working a final puff st in the final ch-1 sp two rows below, ch 1, sc in the final st changing colour. Ch 1, turn.

Row Five: Sc in 1st, ch 1, sk first puff, *puff in sp 2 rows below, ch 1, sk the next puff; Rpt from * across, skip the final puff, sc in the final st switching to your next colour. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it! For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows 4 and 5 alternating colours as necessary. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
