How to Crochet the Chain Waves Stitch Photo Tutorial
The Chain Waves crochet stitch pattern is a wonderfully easy crochet pattern that has a great texture to it. The texture is a small ruffle or “wave” that runs across the top of the fabric. This little ruffle is created by working row of short chains across the front. The back of the stitch pattern is rather plain as the texture is all to the front side.
The fabric in this stitch pattern is not entirely solid so you may want to keep this in mind as you are brainstorming some projects for it. I think these Chain Waves will add some fun texture to almost any project – even wash cloths.

- Ch – Chain Stitch
- Dc – Double Crochet
- Rpt – Repeat
- Sc – Single Crochet Stitch
- Sl St – Slip Stitch
- Yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes:
This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need a multiple of 3 stitches for your foundation chain.
For example, ch 30.
Pattern Instructions:
Row One: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.
Row Two: Sk the next st, [dc, ch 1, dc] in the next st, *sk the next 2 sts, [dc, ch 1, dc] in the next st; Rpt from * across until 2 sts remain, sk the next st, dc in the final st. Ch 1, turn.
Row Three: Sc in the 1st 2 sts, *ch 3, sk the next ch-1 sp, sc in each of the next 2 sts; Rpt from * across, ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.
Row Four: *[Dc, ch 1, dc] working in behind the next ch 3 and into the ch-1 sp 2 rows below; Rpt from * across to the final st, dc in the top of the final sc. Ch 1, turn.
And that’s it!
For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows 3 and 4 for the pattern. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
