How to Crochet the Feather Stitch Photo Tutorial

The Feather Stitch is such a beautiful, textured crochet stitch. It is easier than it looks, and offers such a great squish factor. Look at that stitch definition and the way the light plays off of those stitches! Such depth – I love it! Let’s learn this stitch together today.

About the Feather Stitch:

  • Start with a chain using an odd number of stitches. Stitch multiple is 2 + 3. (in the photo example below I chained 13 which leaves me with 5 “feathers”)
  • Each “feather” is the width of two chains.
  • The Ch-1 at the beginning of the row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Remember to keep your tension a bit on the tight side so that none of your loops become loosey goosey and snag-able.

Feather Stitch Written Tutorial:

1. Chain an odd number of stitches. Half double crochet in the third chain from the hook.

2. Chain one, skip the next chain and half double crochet in the next. << repeat this step to the end of the row.

3. To start the next row, chain one and turn. Half double crochet in the first stitch, and then chain one.

4. To make a feather stitch: * Yarn over pull up a loop in the chain-space. (3 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull up a loop in the skipped chain directly below (from the beginning chain). (5 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next chain-space. (7 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Chain one to close the stitch. Feather stitch made!

5. Repeat step 4 to the end of the row. When you get there, half double crochet in the last stitch. (don’t forget the chain one to close the final feather)

6. Chain one and turn. Half double crochet in the first stitch, and then chain one.

* Yarn over pull up a loop in the chain-space. (3 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull up a loop in the chain-space from the previous row. (5 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull up a loop in the next chain-space. (7 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Chain one to close the stitch. * Repeat from the first asterisk to the end of the row. When you get there, half double crochet in the last stitch. (don’t forget the chain one to close the final feather)

Repeat step 6 until the piece is as tall as you like. That’s it!
