How to Crochet the Sweetheart Stitch Photo Tutorial

This Sweetheart Stitch Crochet Pattern features beautiful clusters of puff stitches that look as though they are little hearts!

This is the reason why I have come to call it the sweetheart stitch. I will work the stitch pattern in a single colour, but I do imagine that if you worked it in two or more colours that it would make the little hearts stand out a little more.

I love this Sweetheart Stitch pattern. It has a little bit of texture and is not too lacy. It has a beautiful drape and could be used in many projects. What immediately comes to mind is a sweet baby blanket or in a lacy shawl.

Notes

  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in one colour.
  • To begin make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch you will need a multiple of eight chains, plus two stitches (8+2) for your foundation chain. For example, ch 26.

Instructions

Row One: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, *sk the next 3 sts, 7 dc in the next st, sk the next 3 sts, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across, ch 3, turn.

Row Two: Puff in the 1st st, *ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, sc in the next dc, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, [puff, ch 2, puff] in the next st: Rpt from * across, puff in the final st, ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn.

Row Three: 3 dc in the 1st st, *sk the next ch-sp, sc in the next sc, sk the next ch-sp, 7 dc in the next ch-2 sp; Rpt from * across, 4 dc in the final st, ch 1, turn.

Row Four: Sc in the 1st st, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, *[puff, ch 2, puff] in the next sc, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, sc in the next dc, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts; rpt from * across, sc in the final st, ch 1, turn.

Row Five: Sc in the 1st st, *sk the next 3 sts, 7 dc in the next st, sk the next 3 sts, sc in the next st; Rpt from * across, ch 3, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern repeat rows 2-5 for the pattern. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
